Director's Note
The film "Stone in the Water" was inspired by a story that took place in the city I come from.
Four friends play truant, as a result of which three boys throw their friend into the river.
For the needs of the film narrative, I created fictional characters and their backstories. The film is a search for answers to the question - what could have connected the high school students and what could have happened that day?
The viewer, like a police officer, learns the story, told from the point of view of the victim. Then the narrative changes and we accompany the characters during carefree events until the climax, i.e. the torturer's testimony. Who is really the torturer and who is the victim?
I invited non-professional actors and first- and second-year acting students to the casting. I wanted naturalness and spontaneity. During the shooting, I created space for improvisation and unexpected behavior.
We talk about difficult things, so already at the script stage we were looking for humor and narrative elements that would be a counterpoint to the film's theme.
The film was made in the Kłodzko Valley, in Lower Silesia - a place where such a story could have taken place.
We decided on a "following" camera, which accompanies the characters in seemingly trivial activities, so that the viewer feels like a participant in the events.
"A Stone in the Water" was created as a 3-year feature film at the Łódź Film School, under the artistic supervision of Jan Komasa
The film begins its festival journey.
